NHS Steroid Emergency Card shortlisted for patient safety award

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Patient Safety Committee and the Society for Endocrinology have been shortlisted for a Health Services Journal (HSJ) Award 2021 in the Patient Safety category. This is for the development of the NHS Steroid Emergency Card and the NHS wide Steroid Safety Strategy, a joint project which was led by Helen Simpson on behalf of the Society, in partnership with the RCP, and involving the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the NHS England and Improvement (NHSE/I) Patient Safety Group.

People with adrenal insufficiency must receive daily replacement steroid medication, which if missed or not increased during illness can lead to life-threatening adrenal crisis. The strategy based on a National Patient Safety Alert, peer-reviewed guidance, and an NHS Steroid Emergency Card was developed to raise awareness of the condition and to help protect patients’ lives.

The winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at Evolution in London on 18 November 2021.
