Making sure you get your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and switching to wholegrain foods could reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, a new study suggests.

Premenopausal women whose diets were high in fibre were almost a fifth less likely to suffer from the disease.

Maryam Farvid, lead author of the study, said that it added to evidence about the benefits of a healthy diet and that women should try to increase their fibre intake.

Researchers pooled data on two million women, collected during 20 observational studies. Overall, they found that the group with the highest consumption of fibre had an 8 per cent lower risk of breast cancer.
