New research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reveals that prescriptions for desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) to treat hypothyroidism almost doubled between 2010 and 2020 in the United States, while prescriptions of levothyroxine monotherapy declined.
The magnitude of this shift in treatment was unexpected by the authors, and they call for additional research to understand what is driving this shift in treatment.
